Estimation of confidence limits for descriptive indexes derived from autoregressive analysis of time series: Methods and application to heart rate va…

2017

The growing interest in personalized medicine requires making inferences from descriptive indexes estimated from individual recordings of physiological signals, with statistical analyses focused on individual differences between/within subjects, rather than comparing supposedly homogeneous cohorts. To this end, methods to compute confidence limits of individual estimates of descriptive indexes are needed. This study introduces numerical methods to compute such confidence limits and perform statistical comparisons between indexes derived from autoregressive (AR) modeling of individual time series. Analytical approaches are generally not viable, because the indexes are usually nonlinear funct…

Estimation of brain connectivity through Artificial Neural Networks

2019

Among different methods available for estimating brain connectivity from electroencephalographic signals (EEG), those based on MVAR models have proved to be flexible and accurate. They rely on the solution of linear equations that can be pursued through artificial neural networks (ANNs) used as MVAR model. However, when few data samples are available, there is a lack of accuracy in estimating MVAR parameters due to the collinearity between regressors. Moreover, the assessment procedure is also affected by the lack of data points. The mathematical solution to these problems is represented by penalized regression methods based on l 1 norm, that can reduce collinearity by means of variable sel…

Three-dimensional Fuzzy Kernel Regression framework for registration of medical volume data

2013

Abstract In this work a general framework for non-rigid 3D medical image registration is presented. It relies on two pattern recognition techniques: kernel regression and fuzzy c-means clustering. The paper provides theoretic explanation, details the framework, and illustrates its application to implement three registration algorithms for CT/MR volumes as well as single 2D slices. The first two algorithms are landmark-based approaches, while the third one is an area-based technique. The last approach is based on iterative hierarchical volume subdivision, and maximization of mutual information. Moreover, a high performance Nvidia CUDA based implementation of the algorithm is presented. The f…

Assessing farming eco-efficiency: a Data Envelopment Analysis approach.

2010

This paper assesses farming eco-efficiency using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) techniques. Eco-efficiency scores at both farm and environmental pressure-specific levels are computed for a sample of Spanish farmers operating in the rain-fed agricultural system of Campos County. The determinants of eco-efficiency are then studied using truncated regression and bootstrapping techniques. We contribute to previous literature in this field of research by including information on slacks in the assessment of the potential environmental pressure reductions in a DEA framework. Our results reveal that farmers are quite eco-inefficient, with very few differences emerging among specific environmental …

1H and13C NMR spectroscopy of brominated diphenyl ethers. A multiple linear regression analysis

2000

The 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts and 1H, 1H coupling constants of 27 brominated diphenyl ethers are reported. The increment models for the bromine substituent effects on the 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts were constructed based on a multiple linear regression analysis. In addition to the single substituent effects, two particle increments and corrective terms for conformational effects are included in these models in order to obtain a reliable prediction of chemical shifts. A statistical study of the additivity of substituent effects on the5J(HH) long-range coupling constant of the formyl proton in substituted benzaldehy…

1982

The additivity of chloro and hydroxy substituent effects on the formyl proton spin-spin coupling constants with the meta ring proton, 5J(HH), has been tested with 15 chlorinated benzaldehydes and hydroxybenzaldehydes by multiple linear regression analysis. No general additivity rule was detected with whole data. Using benzaldehyde as the reference substance, a good correlation was achieved for p-hydroxybenzaldehydes. The same reference compound was not suitable for o-hydroxy derivatives; a much better correlation was observed using o-hydroxybenzaldehyde as a reference compound in the latter case.

Impact of body weight on virological and immunological responses to efavirenz-containing regimens in HIV-infected, treatment-naive adults

2015

Objective: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing among HIV-infected patients. Whether standard antiretroviral drug dosage is adequate in heavy individuals remains unresolved. We assessed the virological and immunological responses to initial efavirenz (EFV)-containing regimens in heavy compared to normal-weight HIV-infected patients. Design: Observational European cohort collaboration study. Methods: Eligible patients were antiretroviral-naive with documented weight prior to EFV start and follow-up viral loads after treatment initiation. Cox regression analyses evaluated the association between weight and time to first undetectable viral load ( 50 copies/ml) after initial s…

Does Tourism Consumption Behaviour Mirror Differences in Living Standards?

2016

Based on the theoretical foundation of well-being measurement, the study explores differences in living standards by analysing the distribution of tourism expenditure. A mixture of regression models is used to explore the heterogeneity in tourism consumption by identifying groups of families with similar tourism consumption behaviour as a function of certain socio-demographic and economic factors. The empirical analysis, performed on Italian expenditure data, suggests that there are three different patterns of consumption behaviour conditional to the socio-demographic and economic covariates in the tourism market and that differences in tourism consumption between groups of households mirro…

Resisting the extortion racket: an empirical analysis

2018

While the contributions on the organized crime and Mafia environments are many, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the firm’s decision to resist to extortion. Our case study is based on Addiopizzo, an NGO that, from 2004, invites firms to refuse requests from the local Mafia and to join a public list of “non-payers”. The research is based on a dataset obtained linking the current administrative archives maintained by the chambers of commerce and the list updated by the NGO. The objective of this paper is twofold: first, to gather sound data on the characteristics of the Addiopizzo joiners; second to model the probability to join Addiopizzo by a two-level logistic regression model. We …

Sirenomelia, case report and review of the literature.

2020

We present a case of sirenomelia diagnosed in the first trimester of pregnancy. The ultrasound examination showed fused lower extremities and an anechoic structure in the lower abdomen that is clue in the early diagnosis. The postmortem study showed the existence of a single umbilical artery (vitelline artery), with an origin in the abdominal aorta. This finding not only explained the presence of a vascular steal with subsequent underdeveloped of pelvic organs, but also differentiated this condition from caudal regression syndrome.
